At the end of May, 2015, the Herkimer County Humane Society received a very generous $8,450 grant from the Melvin L. Kowalsky Designated Fund through the Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties. This grant came at a time when the HCHS shelter lost its boiler and had a washing machine that was on its last legs. A new washing machine was purchased for $460 and replaced the 24 year-old machine that was falling apart. The Board voted in August to install a new boiler by accepting one bid out of four, which happened to be the lowest cost bid overall, from Vincent’s Heating & Fuel Service. This new boiler will be a high efficiency combination boiler and water heater costing $5,400. The remainder of this grant will be used toward the installation of heating coils and ice hooks on the shelter roof, and, if possible, replacement materials for the back of the shelter where the wood siding is deteriorating. We are extremely grateful to the family of Melvin L. Kowalsky and the Community Foundation for their continued support. Their help is crucial to our mission success and to our efforts to improve the quality of our community.
